Discover the charm of baroque and nature! – Kapuzinerberg and Mönchsberg

Leaving the crowed city center we follow one of the oldest parts of the city on the right river bank of the Salzach river, which was medieval highway, border, protection and obstacle for traders, we follow the Linzer Gasse. We climb up to the monastery of the capucin monks, which is located on a former fortifikation site, to get one of the best views to the UNESCO world heritage site the city of Salzburg across the Salzach river. Descending through narrow staircases you will understand the feeling how it was to live in a dense and packed middle ages town like Steingasse is still one of the best examples. Using the oldest pedestrian bridge over the river we arrive Mozart square by passing by medieval fortification just to dive into narrow lanes to visit one of Mozart’s best known characters: Papageno. Kaigasse shows us the home of Paracelsus, a famous doctor of the middle ages and the location of the roman temple of Juvavum, the roman town found 15 BC. Climbing up stairs we visit the convent, originated 714 and still active to have one of the best views into the basin and the surrounding mountains: the Alps. Returning to the city you understand the layout and the borders with the town according to the connectiing borderlines between traders, clerics and monks. Passing by just underneath the fortress of Hohensalzburg you will learn more about this mighty fortification. On top of the mountain will cross the border between Festungsberg and the weaker stone which was laid down by glacial movement in the leeward of the strong granite and dolomite rock.Basically walking alongside the full extend of the crescent which embraces old town you are in the best of two worlds – city and countryside. Allow this unique walk to take off some of your energy and consider to spend between three to four hours exploring the remote part of Salzburg, depending on pace and fitness.
