Stroll into the middle ages and nature

Visit the Tuval and Gutrat castle ruins!

Be prepared to spend some time in nature, climbing up a steep hike to reach a castle ruin on a cliff looking over Salzach river basin just south of Salzburg. Starting from Mirabell Square we take the public bus out of town to reach the start of a tour into the middle age to discover the time, where the crusades where fought and neighbors could become enemies because they were competitors on the markets selling salt. Before the salt mines in Hallein were opened again there was Schellenberg and Tuval. We hike up to the ruins of a castle which was protecting the precious salt. Its origins are dating back into the 12th century, but there are more and for sure elder documented settlements close by. We experience the castle ruins by entering them and enjoying the view. Continuing our walk we have to cross over the ridge, enjoying the brathtaking views of the high mountains surrounding Salzburg and for sure helped to make this special region the stage of the world and home of the movie the sound of music. Hiking down into a narrow river valley we follow the river we end up in Grafengaden the location of a local restaurant and the public bus stop back to Salzburg. There is an optional add-on to this trip, because you are just at the bottom station of the cable car to the Untersberg, which offers you more spectacular views of the region.Allow a minimum of three and a half hours for this trip, fitness and proper shoes are essential for this special experience in the outskirts of Salzburg. Please notice that on thos trip mother nature is embracing you – there will be facilities and restaurants just at the end of the trip! Be aware that we are famous for our rain, so check the weather and your equipment.
